Application of Knowledge

Studying is an act of learning and acquiring information. You can achieve it through reading, researching, practising, and remembering them. As a result, you are going to reach an understanding of the topic that you are learning. However, the process is not over yet. The last thing you need to do is the application of knowledge in a real-life situation.

Although you understand the theory, there is a gap between how to apply knowledge and practice. Studying gives you an understanding, so you know how to use it, but practice reinforces it. As a result, it strengthens your neural connections in the brain, turning short-term memory into long-term understanding. Repetition and refinement will lead to mastery.

In the long run, the application of knowledge helps you to build comfort and confidence with the content that you are learning. It also prepares you to solve problems, write, speak, or work in a specific field. Above all, practices build a bridge for the gap between theory and real-life situations, so they support you in using the information in the right way.

What is meant by the application of knowledge?

Application of knowledge is a process of using information, skills, and concepts you have learned to solve problems, make decisions, and perform tasks in the real world. It acts as the bridge between theoretical understanding and practical action, transforming it into actionable insights. Therefore, it is not just about knowing what something is but how to use it effectively.

Every field has a different kind of knowledge to apply. You can use mathematics to calculate loan payments or review data in a business report. However, you cannot use it to understand social or political issues. Each of them has its unique goals, methods, and types of problems. As a result, the application will depend on the field’s context and needs.

Understanding levels of knowledge application

If you want to do the application of knowledge, there are steps you need to follow. This is because the level shows how deeply and flexibly someone can use what they have learned. It starts with remembering advanced problem-solving and innovation. As a result, understanding each of them can help you to track your progress. You can see the progress from knowing something to mastering and using it effectively.

Something that you need to remember is that studying is a gradual process. Not every problem has the same depth of thinking or action. Consequently, understanding each level of the knowledge application develops your critical thinking process and solves complex problems. According to Bloom’s Taxonomy, here are the processes you need to get through.

Remember

This is the most basic level of learning. It involves recalling or recognising facts, definitions, or procedures from your memory. In this application of knowledge stage, you are not expected to apply what you have learned. That is where you are simply remembering facts or terms of the information in your brain.

Understand

The next level is where you gain an understanding of what you are learning. What it means is you can give an explanation with your own words, summarise content, or interpret meaning. Altogether, this stage focuses on grasping meaning and ideas. It supports you with a basic understanding of the deeper application.

Apply

Apple means where the application of knowledge in the real world begins. From here, you can learn what they have understood and start to use it to solve problems or complete tasks. In this stage, it shows how you can transfer your understanding to new contexts by using the right information.

Analyse

The process doesn’t stop at applying it. In short, knowledge application also grows into examining complex matters. It includes relationships, patterns, or underlying structures in a task or problem. This step requires critical thinking to reach beyond surface understanding by analysing it. This activity uses abilities like comparing, categorising, and identifying causes to break down each little detail and examine issues.

Evaluate

After you can analyse issues or tasks, the next step of the application of knowledge is evaluation. It means you need to make judgements based on criteria and evidence. At this stage, you are going to assess the quality of ideas, arguments, or methods. Then, you can decide if the effort is justified or not. The skills you need to master at this level are critiquing, judging, and defending opinions.

Create

The highest level of application of knowledge is creating something. It shows that you know how to create original work, design solutions, and develop new ideas. You can use creativity and combinations from different areas to make something new to solve problems. It needs abilities like designing, inventing, composing, and planning to master this stage.
