Curiosity

Learning is about acquiring new knowledge, skills, understanding, and attitudes through various means. It involves making connections between new information and existing knowledge. Then, applying it to different situations. It is not only about remembering what you have learnt but also about active engagement, questioning and reflection. However, this activity will not happen without the help of curiosity.

Curiosity is a natural impulse towards better recognition. It means the desire to understand what you know that you do not. Using this trait can improve your ability in learning. This is because it keeps people wanting to know and improves memory. Besides, it shapes critical thinking and problem solving.

When curiosity catches you, there are going to be questions you need answer. A few ways to earn that answer are through exploration and engagement with the learning source. By doing this, you can get deeper and more valuable experiences. As a result, it makes you more interested in the information you’ve found out.

What causes curiosity?

In general, curiosity happens when there are gaps in information or knowledge. When you notice a missing piece, this situation causes a mental itch. The brain naturally tells you to find the answer to that piece. Imagine when somebody tells you a riddle or gives you puzzles. In this situation, the brain acts curiously because it knows there’s a missing part and wants it to be solved.

Other than that, interest occurs when you are facing something you are not expecting. When it happens, the brain becomes aware and stimulated. Uncertainty makes you pay more attention because you want to understand what happened. For instance, it applies when you are reading a story, where you want to know its ending. The urge will make you read until the end of the story to find the answer.

Improving the learning process through curiosity

Curiosity is a trait that improves your studying and learning process. In this case, your brain becomes ready to get new information. It turns your study time from something you have to do into something you want to do. Having an interest will make your studying more effective and enjoyable.

However, this trait is not something you are just born with. It requires training to develop it into a useful skill. If you master it, you can ask better questions, explore ideas actively, and find personal interest in what you are studying. The interest grows naturally. With this in mind, here is what you can do to develop this skill:

“Why?” and “what if?” questions

If you want to grow your curiosity, you can start by challenging yourself to ask deeper questions about what you are learning. Certainly, this habit turns you from a passive receiver of information into an active thinker. When you are in this state, the brain will be more open to exploration and create meaningful connections.

Connecting new information

The more familiar the idea is, the more interest grows in your mind. Relating it to your studies to real life, your interests, or other things that you understand, will help you to become a more critical thinker. Anything personal for you can boost your natural interest. Over time, this habit improves your ability to analyse and evaluate yourself.

Explore beyond the textbook

The knowledge doesn’t stop after you have learning it from the textbook. With curiosity, you want to know more about the topic. It makes you want to find more information through other media. For instance, videos, articles, podcasts, and more. Oftentimes, different formats will make it more engaging for you to learn and easier to grasp.

Be comfortable not knowing

One of the factors that causes interest is when you don’t know about something. There is going to be an urge for you to find out the answer. You should not be embarrassed or frustrated just because you don't have the answer. One way to treat it is as a chance to grow.

Try new things

Curiosity means you have to step out of your comfort zone. What it means is you have to try a new subject, learning method, or skill. When you want toahhh know something, you’re willing to embrace yourself and not afraid of making mistakes. New experiences will trigger this state because they offer you fresh challenges and discoveries.
