What are group discussions?

In an educational setting, group discussions are arranged conversations that involve a small number of participants. People in this forum will talk about a topic under expert guidance. A group discussion can technically be about any topic. This activity helps students look at different cultures and perspectives.

Ideally, a group talk allows participants to get out of their comfort zone without any judgements. It should be empowering enough to help them cultivate analytical skills using different perspectives.

Apart from learning purposes, companies also conduct group discussions. This activity has the same purpose of sharing ideas and exploring new ways of looking at a topic. They also think that this is the best way to see how a candidate will act in a group setting. Whether they will be able to put forward their opinions in a respectful manner without being intimidated by others.

Group discussions have been the basis of effective education and the lifelong learning of a concept. Apart from rote learning and remembering data without knowing its actual relevance, this method has time and again proved to increase their brain power, lead them to develop an outgoing personality, and increase their overall interest in studying. Below are a few reasons why this approach should be frequently integrated into the modern education curriculum:

  1. Improves listening skills - These sessions help students to pause and pay attention to what others have to say. It helps them be able to respond to new ideas, reflect before answering, and know which discussions are worth contributing to.

Group discussions help in bringing everyone on the same page despite these differences. Students learn to respect and respond to opinions that they sometimes don’t agree with.
  3. Builds self-awareness - Students who participate in team discussions don’t just listen to others, they also analyse their points and responses. It helps in better understanding themselves, which eventually builds emotional stability and a sense of assurance in their own voice.
  4. Develops leadership qualities - Group discussions allow students to lead or moderate many conversations. It teaches them how to stay respectful, be neutral, and also try and keep the discussion on track. It is one of the skills that benefit students in almost all areas of life.
  5. Help connect theory to real-life application - These sessions allow students to bring their classroom knowledge into real practise. It helps them better understand the subject and improves their overall retention power.

Dos in group discussions

Here is a list of a few things that you should do before a team discussion. It helps me be an A player when it comes to taking charge of the conversation:

  • Always be prepared. Read beforehand about the topic shows your initiative and seriousness towards the activity.
  • Pay attention when others are talking. It helps in coming up with the topic and responding with better answers.
  • Respect everyone's opinion, even if you disagree with it. Learn to respond politely and try to understand their point of view.
  • Give everyone a chance to speak. Don’t rush for your turn or overstep someone.
  • Encourage those who haven't spoken, and kindly invite them into the conversation. It makes the discussion more inclusive and thoughtful.

Don'ts in group discussions

Below are the key points that you don’t want to do in an actual discussion setting. It will be very rude and disrespectful to others who are also present.

  • Don’t interrupt others when they are talking. Let them finish and then go forward with what you have to say.
  • Always give others a chance to speak, because group discussions are not meant for an individual to keep talking without letting others talk.
  • Try to stay engaged and focused. Avoid talking to people outside the group setting or continuously checking your phone. It can create a wrong impression of yourself.
  • Keep the session interesting by always adding new insights. Repeating the same point again and again can eventually slow the entire discussion.
  • Make a point to ask a question if you don't know something that is being discussed. It shows curiosity and a willingness to learn.
  • Don't get offended if somebody disagrees with your opinions. Staying neutral will help you understand other people’s mindsets and help you look at the topic from a different perspective.
