Learning by Doing

Studying is not all about listening, reading, taking notes, and remembering the content. The lack of engagement in the process causes students to feel disengaged and bored. Moreover, it leads to them not actively processing or applying the knowledge they have learnt. This condition results in them not having a deep understanding or long-term retention of the content. That is why the education sector is using learning by doing for its approach.

What this method does is it applies active participation and hands-on experience for students. That means it uses less reading or listening in the learning process, highlighting practical application and reflection to build their knowledge and retention. As a result, they will have better perception, skill development, and lasting knowledge acquisition.

There are four key points in learning by doing, including active participation, hands-on experience, real-life context, and reflection. All these activities engage multiple senses, improving memory and insight. Therefore, it develops students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. The most crucial part of this method is that it can make studying more personal and meaningful.

Project-based learning (PBL)

As part of learning by doing, PBL is one of the effective approaches to studying. It involves students working on a project over time to gain knowledge and skills. Usually, the project is based on real-world cases, questions, or problems. Instead of just memorising information, they have to involve themselves in researching, planning, creating, and presenting something significant. It makes students take an active role in the study process.

Moreover, this method focuses on critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. As a result, it inspires them to be responsible for their studies. Here are some key features of PBL as a learning by doing method:

  • Real-world connection: Related topics or issues can make the study more relevant.
  • Student choice: Students have the freedom to pick their approach to the project,  building motivation and responsibility.
  • Enquiry and research: Students use questions and investigation to find an answer to the issue.
  • Presentation: They create a final product to show their findings and what they have learnt. The final result from this learning by doing method can be in the form of a report, video, model, or presentation.

Role-play and simulations

In this learning by doing approach, students engage in scenarios. The purpose is to practice their skills in a safe and controlled environment. They focus on giving them experience in certain situations. Moreover, role-play and simulations are more engaging, practical, and realistic. Through these approaches, learners will have a deeper grasp of concepts.

Other than that, learning by doing allows them to practice real-life skills, have a grasp of ideas, and build confidence. Those abilities come from analysing situations and making decisions based on that. After that, students can learn how to express their opinions and listen to others.

Role-play

It is a learning by doing activity where students are acting based on certain roles or situations. In this moment, they can freely explore ideas, practice behaviour, or understand different perspectives. Then, they use the information they have to share their understanding with others. For example, in history class, a student can play the role of a historical figure during a scenario.

Simulations

This is slightly different from role-playing. This learning by doing method focuses on handling a realistic imitation of a real-world process or system. The purpose is to provide a secure space for them to search for answers. For instance, students can have a simulation where they are running a virtual company.

Fieldwork and experiments

Part of the learning by doing approach is for students to make observations and gather data through fieldwork and experiments. They seem similar, but they have a major difference. Fieldwork is where they observe, explore, or collect data in a real-world setting. After that, they can make a conclusion based on their findings. This method is often used for subjects like science, geography, or social studies.

On the other hand, an experiment is an activity where students test their idea or hypothesis. Then, they are going to find the answer through hands-on experience in a controlled setting. Even though these approaches are different, their function is the same. It is to make learning by doing feel real and practical. It provides them with  the experience to see things directly, not just through books.

Service learning

This method of learning by doing is different because it combines academic study with community service. The reason behind it is for students to meet both learning goals and societal needs. This approach encourages them to take part in organised service activities. As a result, it allows them to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world settings. Other than that, it fosters civic responsibility and personal growth. Here are some key aspects of service learning:

  1. Community engagement: In this learning by doing activity, students are collaborating with organisations or individuals outside an academic setting.
  2. Reflection: What this means is that students are going to study based on the feedback they have received.
  3. Experiential learning: They can learn through direct experience and active participation.
  4. Mutual benefit: They can gain practical experience, develop skills, and deepen their understanding through service learning. On the other hand, the community receives valuable support and resources.
