Motivation

Humans continuously learn new things throughout their lives. It is the process of acquiring new understandings, knowledge, behaviours, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. There are a few methods for them to learn such as from experience or instruction. However, a person can’t study everything. For a better outcome, they need motivation to focus on what they need to study.

Motivation is a way to help people focus their attention on a key goal or outcome. Additionally, it acts as an inner force to drive you to take action toward a goal. Activities like studying for an exam, learning a new skill or exercising help you start, continue, and finish tasks. There are three factors behind this which are desire, value, and expectation.

Without a strong desire, there are challenges and drawbacks that you have to face. Oftentimes, you are just exhausting yourself when you are learning without the drive. It leads to exhaustion and mental fatigue. Your brain is less likely to process and retain what you are studying during this state. Having less desire makes the learning experience less effective for people.

The importance of motivation in the learning process

Anytime you are reading a book, a research paper, or other learning materials, it can be difficult or boring. With motivation, it pushes you to stay focused and keep going, although it is not an easy thing to do. Moreover, it influences the effort you put in, how long you stick with a task, and how well you retain what you learn. As a result, the drive will make you enjoy learning, perform better, and reach long-term goals. Here are several key reasons why it is important for your learning process:

  • Initiates action — Helping you to get started.
  • Improves focus — Motivation can make you pay more attention and avoid distraction.
  • Boost persistence — When you encounter problems, it helps to keep going instead of giving up.
  • Increases retention — Remembering and understanding what you have learnt.
  • Enhances performance — Achieving higher scores on tests and completing assignments with better quality.
  • Promotes goal setting — Setting and working toward academic and personal goals

How to gain motivation?

To create motivation, there are steps you need to follow, starting from finding your “why” to taking action. However, it is important to remember that it depends on a combination of mental, emotional, and practical strategies. You cannot just wait for the drive to magically appear. Therefore, you should create it.

Moreover, there are things you need to do to prevent burning out, which can disrupt the learning process. Therefore, the routine should be enjoyable for you, building a positive mindset for a better learning experience. In doing so, creating this drive will help you to do tasks in an effective way. Here are a few steps you need to understand before starting to find your inner force.

Understanding the “why”

Purpose fuels sustainable motivation. That is why there are some questions that need answers before you start the process. You need to ask yourself, what are you going to achieve from this and why? The reason behind this is to link the study with a personal goal, so it feels more meaningful. It can be as simple as you want to earn a good grade or as complex as building a better future for yourself.

Set achievable goals

Learning a new thing requires baby steps. It means you have to start from the small goals before chasing the bigger ones. Oftentimes, big tasks can feel overwhelming and kill your spirit. This situation will be bad for your mental health, causing you demoralisation from not being able to achieve any targets. Meanwhile, completing a small task gives your brain a sense of success, building your confidence to achieve a bigger one.

Ease the process

Naturally, human brains resist effort. It wants the easiest way to complete tasks. However, it is not something you need to embrace. All you have to do is create good habits and a helpful environment to lower mental friction. In doing so, reducing resistance will prepare your conditioning and build routines to achieve motivation.

Use rewards and enjoyment

The studying process can be stressful for your brain. Over time, you will find it harder to learn about new things. You can relieve this condition with rewards or enjoyment. Doing something that makes you happy will release dopamine, the motivation chemical for your brain. You can use snacks, music, or anything else to make studying more enjoyable.

Work on the mindset

What you are thinking is what determines if you are going to move forward or hold you back. If you are thinking negatively about yourself, it will not build the right person you need. What you need is to believe in your ability and see effort as worthwhile. Replace any negative thoughts like “I can’t do this” with “I can figure it out.”

Now is always the time

You need to understand that action leads to motivation, not the other way around. Sometimes, you might feel lazy before taking action. However, the drive kicks in after you begin to do it. Just a few minutes can trigger the mental “gear shift” you need. Once you start, all you need to do is keep the momentum going.
