Designers and engineers use primary, secondary, and tertiary steps when the source is very dirty. They also plan ways to prevent the system from overloading during rainy seasons.

The importance of wastewater treatment

If a country doesn't have proper wastewater treatment, serious problems can happen. Not only problems with public health, but over time, it can also hurt the economy. The country will face short-term and long-term issues that can’t be fixed quickly once they happen. Stopping the risks early is important, even though these systems are costly and need a long-term plan.

Those living in poor communities will suffer the most. They often rely on resources that are not treated. Sometimes they also don’t have access to sanitary facilities. But people in cities will also feel the effects sooner or later. On top of that, big companies that depend on clean sources will struggle too, such as hotels or factories. These are some reasons why wastewater treatment is crucial:

  1. Minimise Public Health Risks: Germs like bacteria, viruses, and parasites live in dirty drainage systems. Without the cleaning system, they can spread diseases like cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. When the environment is contaminated, the effects on people’s health may not be immediate. However, once it happens, it can cause massive diseases that put their lives at stake.
  2. Prevent Soil Contamination: Contaminated sewage can go into the ground and ruin the soil. This is bad for farmers, as they depend on healthy soil moisture. Contaminated soil can't feed plants properly, as clean oxygen transports nutrients to the trees. Over time, this will reduce food production if it affects farming. A proper wastewater treatment helps reduce these threats.
  3. Reduce Economic Threat: The pollution can cause serious economic problems in the future. Diseases from dirty sewage make governments spend more money on health care. Polluted beaches, rivers, and towns drive tourists away and harm small companies. Farmers can't grow crops with polluted drainage, and fishers lose income when sea animals die.

The Process of wastewater treatment

Wastewater treatment works in three main steps: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Nonetheless, tertiary stages are only necessary in special cases. Firstly, the primary phase removes solid particles that float or settle quickly. This step involves physical processes, such as filtering and breaking big debris into smaller pieces. They use devices such as bar screens, grinders, and grit chambers.

In the secondary phase, the system removes waste that passes the first step. Usually, it’s because the material is too small. This is where biological processes take place. Bacteria or other tiny organisms are added to break down the junk. A machine puts air into the wastewater treatment to help the bacteria grow. The oxygen helps the bacteria "eat" the debris. In the end, the bacteria turn it into carbon dioxide and energy.

Lastly, engineers sometimes use tertiary wastewater treatment to protect sensitive areas. These are places where rare animals live or where people swim, fish, or get drinking liquid. This step uses better filtering tools like sand filters or fine screens. Not only that, the engineers would use cleaning tools like chlorine or UV light. It prevents too many plants from growing in lakes or rivers, which causes a problem called eutrophication.

Are wastewater treatment bad for the environment?

Wastewater treatment is not harmful to the environment. Instead, it helps make it better. However, like any implementation process, it can harm nature if not handled properly. Filtration facilities need a lot of power. If this power comes from fossil fuels, it can harm the Earth over time. Also, some facilities use chemicals to clean drainage. If used too much, these can damage the environment too.

To lower these risks, experts are making better tools that are safer for nature. At the same time, they are working to improve laws and regulations to meet clean sewage goals. To enhance efficiency and become more sustainable, new purification methods have been developed. More than that, the industry is also changing to face future challenges. These include climate change, growing populations, and old filtration systems.

Sustainable wastewater treatments also work hard to use less energy during the process. They often use renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power. Another key part of energy efficiency is reusing the remaining dirty sewage for activities that don’t need clean liquid. Some examples of these activities are irrigating plants, cleaning streets, or cooling machines in factories. This helps save fresh resources and protects natural supplies.
