Waterproof paint is a type of coating that provides a protective barrier against water and moisture. While you might want to put it on every wall of your house, it can have some drawbacks as well. This article is going to go in-depth to let you know all about this paint from its use, advantages, drawbacks and even how to use it. 

What makes paint waterproof?

Waterproof paint uses binders forming a water-tight film and additives repelling water to prevent moisture penetration. Regular paints are usually prone to water damage because they don't have these additives. Hence, this kind of paint offers enhanced resistance. It is good for areas exposed to high humidity, moisture, or direct water contact. 

The paint's waterproofing comes from a coating that forms a protective membrane. When it cures, it forms a permanent barrier to water. For example, you may use a waterproofing membrane in a pond to stop water from leaking away, or in a bathroom to prevent water from leaking into the building structure.

Waterproof paint can either be entirely waterproof or water-resistant. It withstands exposure to water without peeling, cracking, or swelling. This paint also resists mould and mildew growth. The paints also provide excellent extra protection for the exterior walls that are prone to dampness and getting drenched with water. 

Types of waterproof paint

Waterproof paint comes in a huge range of types and formulations, each made for a different surface and exposure. There are some which are water-based and offer some ease of application and quick drying. Solvent-based epoxies deliver outstanding adhesion and chemical resistance, perfect for high-traffic areas or submerged structures. When selecting one, you have to know what you need and the properties you want. 

In general, waterproof paint falls into a couple of types based on their binder chemistry and application method. The common ones include water-based acrylics, oil-modified coatings, and bituminous (asphalt) formulations. However, all have different properties and uses. Polyurethane paint

Polyurethane is a rubber-like, flexible coating that works on concrete, wood, and metal. This waterproof paint type is known for its UV resistance and excellent water-repelling qualities. They are easy to apply, give a smooth and seamless finish, as well as resist UV damage and corrosion and offer exceptional durability. Additionally, these paints also stand up well against freezing temperatures and offer an aesthetic appearance.

Epoxy paint

Epoxy paints are highly durable, waterproof, long-lasting, and easy to clean. These paints are resistant to rust, chemicals, heat, acid, and a great deal of moisture. Commonly used on concrete surfaces, epoxy paints are known for their durability and resistance to abrasions and chemicals. This paint contains this type based resin known as polyepoxides, which is about five times thicker than an average floor paint.

Acrolein elasticised paint

Typically, contractors use Acrolein elasticised paint on concrete surfaces. They combine it with acrylic waterproof paint to convert it into a waterproof coating. This coating will prevent mould, mildew, and other bacteria that are fond of moisture. Take extra care when handling this paint since the high toxicity can affect the skin, lungs, and throat. Apart from concrete, acrolein elasticised paint is used on cinder block and stone surfaces. 

Masonry paint

Manufacturers create masonry paint from latex and ceramic materials. Users then apply it to stones, cement, bricks, concrete blocks, etc. This paint makes surfaces waterproof, durable, dirt-resistant, and long-lasting. Masonry paint is environmentally friendly, possesses anti-fungal and anti-ageing properties. It is perfect for outdoor applications because it is UV-resistant and will keep your walls safe from cracking, flaking, and peeling with time. It’s also super easy to clean; all you need is soap and water. 

How effective is waterproof paint? 

Waterproof paint is quite effective due to its forming a moisture-resistant barrier that prevents water from entering, significantly reducing the risk of structural damage and decay on walls and roofs. The fact is, this type of paint doesn’t eliminate the source of moisture and only creates a barrier to hold it back. Commonly used basement materials, such as concrete, are porous, which means water vapours penetrate through them. 

In addition, these vapours have minerals in them that eventually form white, flaky powder buildups called efflorescence. There’s a possibility that this buildup may occur behind waterproof paint coatings, too. If it does, it will exert pressure that will eventually cause the paint to flake off, peel, or blister. In the end, the effectiveness of your waterproof coating also depends on the quality of the prep work because the coat needs to have a solid bond with the surface underneath to be effective.

Guide on applying this paint

Applying a waterproof correctly needs thorough prep work and application to get a lasting, watertight finish. This process includes cleaning and repairing the surface, priming when necessary, applying multiple coats of paint strategically, and inspecting the final result. Follow the detailed list below to guide you through each essential step!

  1. Prepare the surface by cleaning thoroughly to remove dirt, dust, and loose debris; inspect for damage and repair cracks or imperfections; confirm the surface is completely dry.
  2. Apply primer if recommended by selecting a compatible primer; allow 6–8 hours of drying time between oil-based primer coats or 4 hours for latex primer.
  3. Mix the paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure uniform consistency.
  4. Apply the first coat using a high-quality brush, roller, or sprayer; work from top to bottom to fill pores and microcracks; let it dry for 2–4 hours for latex or overnight for oil-based.
  5. Apply the second coat at a perpendicular angle to the first for full coverage; follow the same drying guidelines.
  6. Apply a third coat in areas prone to heavy moisture for extra protection.
  7. Inspect the cured finish for thin or missed spots and touch up as needed to maintain a watertight barrier.
