What is the internet?
It is a global supernetwork that brings together numerous systems using a protocol suite, including the Internet Protocol (IP) and the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The term itself is a shortened version of "interconnected network." Such a web link connects numerous types of devices that serve as the means of communication for individuals, businesses, academic institutions, and government offices. No central body governs the system.

In the late 1960s, the US Department of Defence funded the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), whose job was linking research bodies. It became the root of the internet. Its “official” birth happened in 1983 when ARPANET and the Defence Data Network utilised the IP/TCP standard. Six years later, Tim Berners-Lee launched the World Wide Web (WWW), which made it popular for the general public.
The workflow of the internet
Nowadays, the public takes just less than one second to access the internet. Within one click, new virtual worlds appear on computers, tablets, laptops, and smartphones. IP and TCP are two terms that make the connections happen. IP is like a postal system for data and gives routes for the information to arrive from one device to another. TCP has the same principle to deliver messages and data to all devices. To understand how it works, below is the workflow:
Data division
The internet workflow begins with data division. A simple illustration is better for this workflow. Let’s say you load a webpage. Its data doesn’t form a single packet. Instead, it becomes smaller packages, each of which has a portion of the data. Inside the data are the source of the data and the destination.
Data travelling
The internet becomes the place where the smaller packages “travel” on possibly different routes, thus arriving at different times at the destination. Such a method makes it possible for the system to handle many activities at once. It explains that you can still use the system even if the network is actually busy at a given time.
Routers and switches
At this stage, the internet makes use of routers and switches for directing the packets. The two work differently. Routers link different networks, while switches are for the devices in the same network. A router will examine a data package once it arrives. It looks at the IP address and then forwards it to the next router or switch that is on the way to the destination.
Data verification
Your computer or smartphone reassembles all packages after they arrive at the destination. The packages form into the original message or the enquiry as you type, as you load the webpage. Some perhaps can’t differentiate between the internet and the World Wide Web. They use the terms interchangeably, while they have different meanings. To reiterate, the system means the vast linkage of many networks. The www is part of it as it collects much information from websites that you can access anytime and anywhere.
In other words, the internet is the infrastructure, and the World Wide Web uses the system to run. Inside the web, you can find a rich set of content. Many use it mostly for displaying information, like in a news company or a commercial brand. Nowadays, you can find visual content, such as infographics and videos, and even animations and songs.
