Contractor

The business world can be complex since it involves many details and specialised knowledge in the field. Not everyone has the skill set to do the work. However, they can hire a person or business who has the expertise in this particular job in a particular range of time. This professional is called a contractor.

It is a person or business that works under the terms of a contract to provide goods or services. This role is not the employee of the company they are working for. Meaning that people who work as freelancers, consultants, builders, or gig workers fall into this role. Moreover, there are types for a more exact role they are in.

Working with a contractor involves an agreement, including the job they are taking, deadlines, and the price they are going to earn from this task. Also, it handles who provides the tools and the method they will use during the process. Depending on the deal, some companies let them work in their own way as long as they reach the targets set in the contract.

What is the role of a contractor?

Their key responsibility is to provide specialised skills for specific projects or tasks. They provide the planning, including scheduling tasks and setting priorities. Also, there is a chance they have to coordinate with other people, like suppliers or other workers. In the end, they have to deliver the work within the agreed deadline, ensure everything meets the standards, and fix or adjust if it doesn’t meet expectations.

Since they are working independently, the employer usually doesn’t keep a close eye on them. You need to understand that every contractor has their own method to do the job. As long as they can deliver the deliverables they have agreed upon, it won’t be a problem. Plus, they are going to use their own equipment to do the tasks and maintain tools, licenses, and certifications for the work.

Types of contractors

There are several types of them, depending on the task they are going to handle. Each industry has its own kind of work, tools, and expertise. For example, in construction, you need a general contractor because they can manage projects, and subcontractors for specialised tasks. This means that the types can help them meet more specific needs.

Also, not every contractor has the skills and expertise in a certain field. There are people who can do graphic design, content writing, programming, and more. For more information, here is an explanation of each type:

Independent contractor

This type is where a self-employed person provides services to clients under a contract. They are not employees but work under a contract. Once the work has finished, the relationship between them usually ends unless there is an agreement to renew it. Usually, professionals in this category are graphic designers, freelance writers, and more.

General contractor

This is when someone or a company manages an entire project. Companies commonly use this type in the building sector. They are in charge of planning, coordinating, and executing the project from the beginning to the end. If the contractor doesn’t have the specialisation they need, they often hire subcontractors to handle the specific parts of the job.

Subcontractor

It is the type of contractor hired by another company. Their duty is to carry out a specific task or part of a larger project. The person or people in this field are often highly skilled specialists and rarely have direct communication with the client. Examples of this type are plumbers, electricians, and more.
