CPD - Asthma Awareness and Training

One of the most common diseases in the UK is asthma, where 7.2 million people have this condition. The prevalent one is triggered by allergens like pollen, pets, and dust mites. It said that 4 out of 5 people carry this condition. On the other hand, about 1 in 5 people suffer from non-allergic asthma, which things like air pollution, stress, or cigarette smoke can trigger. This is the reason asthma awareness and training is important.

In 2019, asthma caused 2.6 deaths per 100,000 women and 1.63 per 100,000 men. Unfortunately, this problem came from people who didn’t have the proper treatment, even the most basic elements of care. Most people don’t realise that asthma is a serious condition and requires treatment to control and prevent asthma attacks. In this course, we are going to help you improve your asthma awareness to prevent more casualties.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a condition where your airways narrow and swell and it may also produce extra mucus. This condition can cause you to have breathing problems and trigger coughing. Oftentimes, it makes a whistling sound or wheezing when you breathe out with shortness of breath. If you don’t have asthma awareness, this can be a problem for you or other people who have such a condition. 

For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. But, it will be different if someone has severe asthma that can make it difficult for them to do daily activities. That may lead to a life-threatening condition. Sadly, there is no cure for this disease, but luckily, it can be controlled. Here are the symptoms of asthma:

• Shortness of breath
• Chest tightness or pain
• Wheezing when exhaling
• Trouble sleeping because of shortness of breath, coughing, or wheezing
• Coughing or wheezing gets worse if you get infected with a respiratory virus like a cold or the flu

Eligibility Requirements

Everyone can join the CPD - Asthma Awareness and Training course since there are no requirements. Also, this is open for anyone with or without asthma. However, this is most suitable for care workers, healthcare assistants, support workers, or community service workers. This is because they often have to deal with people with this kind of disease.

When you learn about asthma awareness, you can be more independent and confident because you already have the knowledge and understanding about the disease. You understand how asthma can be triggered, what are the symptoms, and the treatment options. Handling someone when asthma attacks

There is a huge chance that you will meet someone with asthma attacks, especially since about 8 of 100 people in the UK suffer from this condition. That is why we need asthma awareness to be able to help the people in need, including yourself. This attack can lead to injuries or even loss of life. Here are what you have to do when you find someone or yourself with asthma attacks:

1. Stay calm and offer reassurance: Anxiety can worsen the attack, so you need to be able to calm them and reassure them that you can help
2. Assist with their inhaler: Usually, people who have asthma have prescribed reliever inhalers. You need to help them use it by taking one puff every 30-60 seconds, up to a maximum of 10 puffs.
3. Sit them in a comfortable position: When someone gets an asthma attack, they need to sit upright in a comfortable position. Do not let them lie down. You should encourage them to breathe slowly and deeply.
4. Remove triggers: After you learn the CPD - Asthma Awareness and Training, you can spot the triggers for asthma. You need to remove the potential triggers and ensure they are in a well-ventilated area, but avoid exposing them to cold air.
5. Call emergency services if needed: You need to call the emergency service if they don’t have an inhaler, their symptoms do not improve after 10 puffs, and they struggle to breathe, talk, or stay conscious.
