What are the red flags of sepsis?

Changes in temperature, heart rate, breathing, skin condition and mental state are the evident indications of a possible illness. Older people, very young, pregnant, or have other health problems are at higher risk of getting sepsis. This is because they have a weak immune system, making them less able to fight off the infection effectively.

Breathing

Technically, when the person fights a severe infection, it triggers a response which increases the breathing rate to deliver more oxygen to tissues. 

Skin

The red flags of sepsis include skin that becomes pale, blotchy, or bluish, often described as mottled. This condition can be seen on the lips, tongue, or even the palms of the hands, especially on darker skin tones. It happens because the body does not get enough blood and oxygen circulation due to widespread swelling. 

Mental health

Not knowing who you are can be one of the red flags of sepsis, especially in older people. This is often the earliest mental symptom and can appear before other signs.
