It has the ability to overwhelm you, and it may lead you to great lengths to avoid its source. What is the phobia of needles?

Phobia of needles, also known as trypanophobia, is the term for someone who is afraid of syringes in medical settings. Unfortunately, it can cause them problems when it is in the healthcare setting, such as avoiding getting vaccines, blood draws, or intravenous fluids (IV). Research says this condition came from genetic and environmental factors such as traumatic experiences with needles.

Until now, there is no specific reason why some people are afraid of syringes. Different people might be afraid of certain aspects of injections. For example, it can be hypersensitivity to pain or fear of being restrained. When a person with a phobia of needles sees injections, they will feel intense anxiety at the sight or thought of the procedure, which often leads to panic attacks. 

A common experience in a phobia of needles

One of the most common things in people with a phobia of needles is passing out. Around half of people with this fear have fainted at least once. It happens because of a two-stage physical response. First, there is an increase in blood pressure in anticipation of the situation. Then, it is followed by a sudden drop in blood pressure.

Even though it is pretty common, scientists still don’t understand how this mechanism works. However, they speculate the reason is that there are differences between people and how sensitive they are to changes in blood pressure. What is also known is that really intense fear can activate the vagus nerve, which causes fainting. Here are other common experiences of phobia of needles:

• Dizziness
• Heart racing
• Insomnia
• Nausea and vomiting
• Temporarily increased blood pressure

In doing so, they will have the ability to create a plan on how to ease their fear by recognising their anxiety response. In this training , the learners will acquire the following information:

• Identifying signs and symptoms
• Communication strategies
• Intervention techniques
• Creating a supportive environment

To support the participants in getting the best information, we are working with experts’ and professionals’ opinions in this area. Also, they will have to engage in exercises such as real-life scenarios and interactive questions. In doing so, they can create a safe environment for people who have a phobia of needles.

Enrolment Criteria

Anyone can join the CPD – How to Support Those with a Phobia of Needles course since there are no entry standards. This training is suitable for people who work in healthcare, like nurses, phlebotomists, and medical practitioners. However, you can take this because everyone should have the ability to help people with this phobia and ease their fear. 

How do you treat someone with a phobia of needles?

Unfortunately, there is no cure to treat the phobia of needles, but you can minimise the symptoms through multiple strategies. One of the strategies is exposure therapy. It involves slowly introducing the specific concern into your life. For example, a therapist will show you a picture of injections, then you have to stand near a syringe, and after that, you will have to hold one. This technique will change your physical and mental response to needles.

The other is talk therapy, where you talk to the therapist about your phobia of needles. From here, you can learn new coping techniques and different ways to think about your concerns. It guides you to have more control over the symptoms. If those ways are not working for you, there are medications designed to handle your fear. Moreover, here are some ways to overcome your trypanophobia:

1. Avoid watching the syringe
2. Bring a support person to a medical appointment
3. Distract yourself
4. Practise deep-breathing techniques
5. Relax the muscle while receiving an injection

It encourages individuals to practise coping strategies to overcome their fear. With proper support and understanding, people with this fear can have medical procedures more comfortably.
