Take American and British English as an example. They are both English languages but still have variations in words. For instance, for Americans it is “french fries” but for British, it is “chips”. Imagine asking for your American coworker for chips. Instead, you are given a crisp because crips for Americans are chips!

The example above can be funny, but intercultural communication barriers can be deeper than that. As stated before, culture is more than just the language. Some actions can be taken as polite for one culture, but impolite to another. This can cause confusion and conflict and might result in an unhealthy workplace.
