This is why language and communication development is so important as it helps individuals express themselves clearly and connect with others in meaningful ways.

In this course, CPD – Language and Communication Development, you will explore how language and communication skills develop at different stages of childhood and how this impacts a child's overall growth. You will also learn effective ways to support children in developing their communication skills, helping them express themselves clearly and confidently.

What is language and communication development?

Language and communication development is a growth process in a person’s ability to convey thoughts, feelings, and ideas through words. The combination of these two concepts is widely used in daily conversation. Through this process, people can understand each other and express themselves effectively.

As people grow, their language and communication skills improve through listening, speaking, reading, writing, and even nonverbal cues such as gestures and facial expressions. Strong language and communication abilities are essential for learning, working, and connecting with others in everyday life.

Moreover, language and communication development actually starts in the womb. Even though babies are not out in the world yet, they can still hear the sound and pattern of language. That is the reason why, talking to a child as early in the womb would be a great way to develop their speaking skills.

5 Components of Language

Language is a complex system, but it can be understood through its five main components: Syntax, Morphology, Phonology, Semantics, and Pragmatics. While each language has its own unique system, these five components serve as the foundation for all languages. Below are the five components and how they are used in constructing sentences.

1. Syntax – This is about how we put words in the right order to make sentences.
   • Example: "The cat sleeps on the bed" is correct, but "Sleeps the cat on bed the" is not.
2. Morphology – This is how words change to show different meanings.
   • Example: "Play" changes to "playing" or "played" to show time.
3. Phonology – This is about the sounds in a language and how we use them.
   • Example: The words "bat" and "pat" sound different because of the first letter sound.
4. Semantics – This is about the meaning of words and sentences.
   • Example: "I’m feeling blue" doesn’t mean your skin is blue; it means you're sad.
5. Pragmatics – This is how we use language in real-life situations.
   • Example: You say "What’s up?" to a friend but "Good afternoon, sir" to your teacher.

2 Types of Verbal Communication

Verbal communication is the only type of communication that uses words. In addition to that, It has two subtypes: Spoken and Written. These two subtypes represent the different methods of using words to communicate. Spoken communication involves using words through speech, like in conversations or phone calls, while written communication involves using words in written form, like in texts, emails, or letters. Both types are essential for conveying messages and sharing ideas effectively.

Stages of Language and Communication Development: 

Language and communication development occurs in distinct stages as children grow. These stages begin with basic sounds and gestures, progressing to single words, then to simple sentences, and eventually to more complex structures. Each stage plays a key role in a child’s ability to communicate effectively and express thoughts.

Pre-linguistic Stage (0-6 months)

• This stage focuses on early communication through sounds and gestures, like crying, cooing, and responding to noises.

Early Language Development (6-24 months)

• Babbling Stage (6-12 months): Repetitive consonant-vowel combinations like "ba-ba."
• One-word Stage (12-18 months): Single words used to represent ideas (e.g., "mama," "ball").
• Two-word Stage (18-24 months): Simple two-word sentences (e.g., "big truck," "want juice").

Advanced Language Development (2-3 years and beyond)

• Early Multi-word Stage (2-3 years): Short sentences with three or more words (e.g., "I want to play").
• Complex Sentences Stage (3+ years): Use of more complex sentences, including questions and varied structures.

Who Can Join

No prior experience is required for this course. It’s open to anyone interested in language development, especially parents, teachers, and students. A basic understanding of child development is helpful but not necessary. Participants should have a willingness to learn practical strategies to support children’s language growth.
