Cleaning up chemical spills in the workplace

You must never enter an area if you cannot fully assess the situation well enough. The following steps should be taken to clean up chemical spills:

1. Prevent the spread of chemicals to other areas

Once you learn about the spilt substances, ensure that they won’t reach other areas of the building. After wearing protective equipment, close all doors and windows and immediately turn on fume hoods for better air circulation.

2. Offset acids and bases

If possible, try to deactivate acids and bases before mopping them down. However, in some cases, deactivation may cause intense heat and splashes. This is why it’s important to have soda ash or sodium bicarbonate for acids and citric acid for bases. Once done, check for pH levels afterwards.

3. Control the spread of liquid and absorb them
