Substitution

If elimination isn’t possible, the next step is to replace the danger with something safer. For example, instead of using a harmful chemical, a safer one can be used. This lowers the risk while still allowing the task to continue.

Engineering

Next, changing the workplace or equipment is best if the risk can’t be removed. This could mean adding things like air systems to reduce harmful exposure or setting up safety barriers to keep workers away from dangerous machines. These changes help make the environment safer.

Administrative

Then, change how people work to reduce exposure to the risk. For example, reducing how long workers stay in dangerous areas can be done through work rotations. Similarly, altering work schedules will help you avoid high-risk times. Training workers properly is also an important part of this.

PPE

Finally, if all other steps are not enough, use personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE includes things like helmets, gloves, safety glasses, or masks to protect workers. While PPE is important, it doesn’t remove the danger itself. So, it should only be used when other methods can’t manage the risk.
