Rainwater harvesting systems are designed in such a way that they capture, store, and reuse rainwater for different activities. They are widely used in commercial and residential buildings as an alternative to fresh water. Which eventually helps them reduce their overall water bills and also promote sustainability. • Collection of Rainwater – The first step is to collect rainwater that falls on surfaces such as rooftop areas. This rainwater is then transported via sealed gullies or gutters to the storage system.
• Filtration system – Before entering the main storage, the water passes through the filter tanks. These are meant to remove any solid debris or pollution before it enters any of the main storage tanks. These filter tanks must always be accessible and properly maintained to remove dirt or pollutants.
• Water storage – The filtered water is not kept in the main storage tanks, which can either be above or below the ground. The water enters the storage tank via the inlet calmer, which also helps filter any leftover solid particles below the ground. On average, a storage tank is meant to hold water worth 18 days of demand.
• Distribution – Once the water is stored, it is then distributed using a pump or through gravity. For drinking or cooking, the water then needs further treatment to make sure it is safe to consume.
• Regular maintenance and constant monitoring – For better efficiency and results, rainwater harvesting systems need proper maintenance along with constant monitoring. You should always clean the gutters, check the storage tanks, and keep checking the water levels.
