This document is known as RIDDOR. To make it clear, the record helps workers at a company or self-employed people be informed of workplace accidents.

RIDDOR is an important part of the UK health and safety rules. Telling companies to notify incidents through this record strengthens safety practises. Also, it helps identify areas for improvement in safety protocols. However, some emergencies are not trackable, but it does not mean that the general rules of the Health and Safety at Work Act do not apply.

What does RIDDOR mean?

RIDDOR is a law that stands for Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations. It requires businesses to announce and keep records of any work-related deaths, injuries, illnesses, or dangerous events. Also, it aims to inform the right authorities about accidents at work.

For example, when these incidents fall under RIDDOR, businesses must communicate them to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). This way, it helps companies spot potential risks and prevent future accidents. Regarding this, the tracking system is usually done online. The HSE uses this information to check if the workplace is following UK health and safety rules.

Additionally, RIDDOR applies to all workplaces in the UK, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. However, the monitoring rules differ slightly in each area. In England, Wales, and Scotland, the HSE and Local Authorities (LAs) handle the analysis. In Northern Ireland, the LAs and the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) are in charge.

Why RIDDOR matters

RIDDOR is important for keeping workplaces safe and accountable. This ensures that businesses track all accidents and handle them properly. For example, if companies don't inform the right authorities about documentable incidents, they are breaking the law. If the HSE discovers that a company hid an accident or missed an update, it could face court action. Even worse, it could lead to a prison sentence of up to two years. 4. Employee Awareness: Informing workers about these situations helps them understand risks and safety rules. For example, when they know what went wrong, they are more likely to act in ways that avoid future risks. 
5. Collaboration and improvement: The risk brief builds teamwork between employees, companies and the relevant authorities. Sharing information helps make safety policies better. This leads to creating a risk-free workplace for everyone.

However, it is more beneficial for some people, such as managers, business owners, and health and safety officers. They are the ones exposed to portraying a vital role with regard to safety maintenance. This helps them widen their understanding of the topic. By taking this course, you will have opportunities to create an organised monitoring tool and create a safer and healthier place for your business.

Responsible person for RIDDOR incidents

Additionally, a person in charge under RIDDOR should send the analysis. However, if you are hurt, a member of the public, or someone without duties under this law, don’t use this system. On the other hand, if you just want to raise a concern with HSE you can still reach out to them if you are a worker, acting on an employee's behalf, or a member of the public.

1. For non-fatal injuries, fatalities, and any dangers: The responsible person will be the employer, and for self-employed people or non-workers, the person in control of the premises.
2. For an occupational disease, exposure to carcinogens and offshore incidents: The responsible person will be the employer, and for the people who work for themselves, can do it by themselves,
