In the year 2023/2024, there is an increase in people being admitted to hospital because of stroke in the UK. There are 111,137 stroke admissions, a 28% increase from the 2004/2005, which was 87,069. However, technological advancement and new treatments helped 1.3 million people survive this attack. In doing so, they have to go through 3 stages of stroke recovery.

A stroke is a condition when blood stops flowing to a part of your brain. This process causes brain cells to die which limits your body functions, such as speech and movement. The effects depend on which part of your brain is affected and how long blood flow is cut off.

Usually, someone who catches this illness will take a long time to fully heal. However, the possibility of fully recovering from this is a rare sight, even though it is not a myth. The number shows about 10% of the survivors achieve complete rehabilitation, although it can take months or years. In general, there are 3 stages of stroke recovery.

What are the signs of recovery from a stroke?

The general signs of someone recovering from a stroke are improved mobility, reduced fatigue, better balance, cognitive improvements, and emotional resilience. However, each person has different experiences depending on the location and the damage that occurs. But they are still going through the 3 stages of stroke recovery, which are flaccidity, spasticity, and recovery of voluntary movement. Here are more signs when someone is recovering:

Can cross the legs

Even though this is not a formal assessment, it can be a good indicator of recovery if it happens in the first 15 days after the attack. A study shows that the ability to cross your legs increases the survival rate and the ability to walk again. 

Find yourself sleeping more

When you are sleeping, the brain is recovering your body. Hence, if you are resting more, that indicates the brain is working harder so you can recover faster. Whenever you are feeling sleepy, don’t fight it and just go to sleep. This will help you go through 3 stages of stroke recovery much faster. However, if you are extremely tired but there is no progression, you may want to speak with your doctor.

Spastic muscles are twitching

If your muscles start twitching, it can be a good sign for you. It means the spasticity in your muscles is decreasing. Muscle spasticity involves tight and stiff muscles due to the brain's inability to communicate with the muscles properly. When it starts to twitch, communication is slowly restored.

Curriculum Outline

Throughout this course, there is going to be a deeper understanding of the 3 stages of stroke recovery where the participants can learn and implement the information. Then, they will have the ability to make a rehabilitation strategy and determine which care methods are suitable for the condition. Furthermore, the training provides the learners with:

This programme will take two formal CPD hours and you will receive an electronically signed certificate of completion to confirm it.

The CPD – The 3 Stages of Stroke Recovery course is available for everyone. This training is also suitable for doctors, nurses, caregivers, and any healthcare professionals. Besides that, people who have relatives of stroke survivors are welcome, especially if they want to understand the healing progress better.

The timeline of 3 stages of stroke recovery

When someone lives through a stroke, they will need plenty of time to be able to recover. The 3 stages of stroke recovery show the common recovery process the survivor goes through after the stroke. Each stage has its own challenges, goals, and treatment approaches. Here is the timeline of the healing process.

Acute phase

This early part of the 3 stages of stroke recovery begins immediately after a stroke. Usually, it lasts for a few days to weeks. The main focus of this phase is to keep the patient's condition stable, prevent complications, and early rehabilitation. In this phase, they will do physical and neurological tests to monitor for problems. As a result, the healthcare workers can stabilise the patient’s vital functions, prevent further brain damage and complications, and initiate early healing.

Subacute phase

This happens a few weeks to several months after the stroke. The second phase's main focus is focused on recovery treatments and regaining lost functions. Basically, the brain is going through a process called neuroplasticity, where it is fixing itself to compensate for damaged areas. There will be restoration and changes in daily habits due to the attack. In this phase, it allows the survivors to increase their ability to do things on their own.

Chronic phase

The last phase of the 3 stages of stroke recovery is the long-term healing process, where some patients might improve, and others have to adapt to permanent changes. Other than continuing the rehabilitation, they have to manage ongoing problems after a stroke, both in the body and mind. This will help them to maximise their independence and quality of life.
