Parkinson’s mainly affects movement. Specifically, it causes shaking, muscle stiffness, and slow movements, making it difficult to walk or balance. Furthermore, as it gets worse, people may find it hard to talk, smile, or even perform simple tasks. In addition, they may feel tired or have problems sleeping, but their memory might, for the most part, remain intact.

On the other hand, Alzheimer’s affects memory and thinking. For instance, people with Alzheimer’s forget things like names or where they are, and over time, it can become hard to make decisions. Moreover, as the disease progresses, they may struggle with daily activities like dressing or eating. Eventually, they might also get confused and have trouble recognising family and friends.

Is there a connection between Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's?

Yes. The connection between Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's is that both diseases cause problems in the brain because of abnormal protein buildup. In Parkinson’s, a protein called alpha-synuclein builds up and messes with brain cells, making it hard to move. In Alzheimer’s, different proteins called amyloid and tau build up, affecting memory.

As both diseases get worse, they damage brain cells. Some people with Parkinson’s also start to have memory problems, just like Alzheimer’s. This can lead to a condition called Parkinson’s disease dementia, where both movement and memory are affected. The main connection is the way proteins damage brain cells in both diseases.

The Mirror Effect: How Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Intersect Over Time

Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease both affect the brain, but they start and progress in different ways. In simple terms, Parkinson’s starts with movement issues and can later affect memory, while Alzheimer’s starts with memory loss and later affects movement.

• Parkinson’s disease begins with movement problems. A person may have tremors, stiffness, slow movements, or trouble with balance and coordination. These symptoms happen because the brain gradually loses control over body movements. As the disease gets worse, some people may also develop memory problems and difficulty thinking clearly, but these usually appear later.
• Alzheimer’s disease starts with memory loss and cognitive decline. At first, a person may forget recent events, struggle to find words or get lost in familiar places. As the disease progresses, the brain’s ability to control movement also weakens, eventually leading to physical decline and immobility.
