Meaning of epilepsy

It is a long-term disease that causes repeated seizures, which are short episodes where the body moves involuntarily. It can affect part or all of the body. Sometimes, it can cause people to lose consciousness. They may also lose control of their bladder or bowels.

These seizures happen because the brain's signals become uncontrolled. These signals can start in different parts of the brain. This is why it can be different each time. Also, this condition has different types. For example, some cases cause a lack of focus. Others cause muscle jerks or continuous shaking. If a seizure lasts too long, it becomes a serious problem. This is called status epilepticus.

Status epilepticus occurs when seizures don’t stop after a usual amount of time. There are many types of epileptic fits, but convulsive status epilepticus is the most dangerous. This kind of episode is a continuous tonic-clonic seizure. It is always a medical emergency. It’s important to understand the different categories because it helps you respond properly and support people with epilepsy.

What are the different types of epilepsy?

There are two major types of epilepsy, which are the Generalised and Focal Epilepsy. Such illness identically refers to sudden episodes. However, everyone’s experience with epilepsy is different. These types differ in how they affect the brain in many ways. For example, there is a seizure that only affects one part of the brain. On the other side, there is another type that affects the entire brain. To make it more clear, below are the explanations for each type.

A. Generalised epilepsy

Generalised epilepsy is a brain mixed signal condition where it affects the entire brain at the same time. This type of epilepsy generally has seizures that are mostly idiopathic. This means that there is no definitive cause. In most cases, this condition will begin during childhood or adolescence. Sometimes, this epilepsy type happens due to several conditions, like brain trauma or a stroke. But it doesn’t end there. Generalised epilepsy also has different types of possible convulsion, such as:

• Aura: The early signs of a seizure
• Absence: Tendency to stare into blank space
• Tonic: Muscle’s stiffness
• Atonic: Drop attack with consciousness retained
• Myoclonic: Short body jerks movements, usually less than a second
• Clonic: The body experiences rhythmic jerking movements for more than a second
• Tonic-clonic: A combination of tonic and clonic seizure types, usually starting with tonic and followed by the clonic phase.

B. Focal epilepsy

Focal epilepsy is a brain disease that affects one side of the brain, which is the Lobe. People with this focal condition usually have focal seizures. These seizures can also happen from one area to another. Generally, it starts with an aura, which is the minor symptom that marks the beginning of the episodes. Similar to the first type, this condition has two different types. They are determined by the person’s awareness during the shaking episodes. It includes focal onset awareness and focal impaired awareness.

• Focal onset awareness: It is a shaking episode where a person does not lose their consciousness and awareness. Sometimes, a person can even talk during this shaking episode. They can even remember what happens during the seizures. This condition often leads someone to feel deja vu, stomachache, and any abnormal movements.
• Focal impaired awareness: It is a sign that sometimes a person loses their awareness. They may or may not cause abnormal movements. As the episodes happen, the person can experience motor and non-motor symptoms. Some motor symptoms include muscle twitching, jerking, spasms, and repeated movements. Meanwhile, non-motor symptoms include waves of hot or cold, goosebumps, lack of movement, and mood thoughts changes.
