This course will teach you live-saving skills such as CPR, handling choking incidents, handling choking incidents, and managing injuries like fractures, burns, and wounds. In addition, we will ensure that our participants are knowledgeable about the legal and regulatory requirements in childcare settings. And lastly, we want our learners to build confidence in dealing with medical emergencies calmly and effectively.

Course Overview

This qualification is designed to provide learners who are working in, or who are intending to work in, a childcare setting and who administer paediatric first aid (PFA) to an infant or child who requires attention. In addition, this qualification can also be used for learners already working or preparing to work in the industry. 

This qualification is based on the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, setting the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five (March 2017) and the Childcare Act 2006. The validity of this qualification is 3 years from the date of certification.

Course Structure

The NQual Award in Paediatric First Aid consists of 2 mandatory units that every learner should take. In each unit, learners will learn about a specific aspect of Paediatric First Aid.

Unit 1

The first unit tackles the Emergency Paediatric First Aid.

• Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider.
• Be able to assess an emergency.
• Provide first aid for an infant and an unresponsive child.
• Can provide first aid for an infant and a child who is choking.
• Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with external bleeding.
• Know how to provide first aid to an infant or child who is suffering from shock.
• Learn how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with bites, stings, and minor injuries.

Unit 2

On the other hand, the second unit discusses Managing Paediatric Illness, Injuries, and Emergencies.

• Be able to administer first aid to an infant or child with suspected injuries to bones, muscles, and joints.
• Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected head and spinal injuries.
• Learn how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears, and nose.
• Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with an acute medical condition or sudden illness.
• Comprehend how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who is experiencing extremes of body temperature.
• Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who sustained an electric shock.
• Learn how to administer first aid to an infant or a child with burns or scalds.
• Understand how to administer first aid to an infant or a child with suspected poisoning.
• Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with anaphylaxis.

Every learner learns differently, including the amount of time until they finish completing this course. However, the estimate of the total length of time it is expected that a learner will typically take to achieve and demonstrate the level of understanding required for the NQual Award in Peadiatric First Aid course of this qualification is 15 hours. This includes the Guided Learning Hours and the time spent completing the independent study.

The minimum age for you to enter this course and learn is 14 years old. Our NQual Award is delivered both as live online lectures and prerecorded lecture sessions. If you are not able to attend the live lecture sessions you will still be able to access the course via the recordings.
