Global Tourists
Between 2019 and 2023, the transportation sector recorded a lower number of global tourists. This forced many tourist destinations to stop running due to the lack of revenue. They didn’t welcome as many guests as they had in the past. Thankfully, the cloud has passed. The travel field is slowly returning to the pre-pandemic era.
How is the condition of global tourism today?
International tourism is rebounding based on the data from the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). The number of global tourists grew 5% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to last year. During the first quarter of 2025, over 300 million tourists spent a holiday in foreign countries. The figure was around 14 million higher than during the first quarter of 2024.
All continents saw an increasing number during the first quarter of 2025. In that period, Europe received 125 million global tourists, up 2% from the first three months of 2024. Central and Eastern Europe came back stronger by receiving 8% more guests from overseas as compared to 2024.
Africa welcomed around a 9% rise in travellers’ arrivals compared to 2024. However, at a smaller percentage, America saw 2% more global tourists than last year. The Middle East recorded 1% growth, while Asia and the Pacific received 12% growth in arrivals compared to the statistics in 2024.
Four new ways of travelling for global tourists
The strong recovery of the travel industry is impacted by several factors. First, it relates to the world economy, which is slowly improving thanks to stable health and safety situations. As more people get back on the roads, money starts circulating much faster than in the pandemic era. Global tourists book tickets by train, bus, and aeroplane. Therefore, they stay at the hotel, eat at the nearby restaurants, and buy local keepsakes.
The second one relates to the younger generations, who think that travelling is not just a luxury. Generation Z, in particular, makes exploration one of their top priorities in life. The third is technology, like artificial intelligence and mobile apps. All of the factors that have shaped today’s tourism industry are as follows.
-
Self-guided tours
Mobile apps and chatbots are the two major drivers behind this travel style. Therefore, more global tourists are using technology to explore new tourist destinations that meet their preferences. Mobile apps offer interactive maps to guide users to arrive at the points of interest without having to worry about getting lost. Moreover, chatbots help them book hotel rooms and answer their questions instantly.
-
Eco-tourism
There is a growing trend in eco-tourism. This travelling mode takes into account reducing waste in nature. In other words, you can call this mindful travelling. In this regard, the visitors will opt for accommodations that use renewable energy, like solar or wind. They will take electric vehicles or public transportation while spending the holiday in certain countries.
-
Event travelling
As the name suggests, this holiday style means going somewhere for a special event or experience. For example, a lot of global tourists book pricey aeroplane tickets just to attend the concerts of their beloved singers. This holds true for many travellers who wish to watch their favourite football teams. Others seek a once-in-a-lifetime experience viewing the aurora borealis between late August and early April.
-
Solo travel
Among the young generations, travelling isn’t just arriving at a new and strange place. It also means a change for self-discovery, which challenges them to explore places, culture, and people all alone. By meeting strangers, they know how to solve problems and adapt to dynamic situations. This fulfils their souls because they’ll know and love themselves better.
New job roles in global tourism
The new ways of travelling above have created more job roles in the field of tourism. If you are keen to help global tourists, grow this interest by studying tourism management and technology. This includes studies on destination planning, event management, and hospitality. For eco-tourism, you will need to learn about environmental issues.
The technology side will help you with marketing and promoting tourist destinations. Learn a bit about designing and social media so that you can reach a wider audience. You need to have more knowledge of the points of interest around the attractions to create more varied content. The list below is the roles that you can try.
1. Travel content creators
The first role suits you best if you love travelling. It’s time to make money from your hobby using social media platforms. Grow your audience by making useful and fun content as bloggers, vloggers, and influencers. Share holiday tips, recommendations, and experiences with global tourists. As the numbers of your followers grow, you can monetise your content or work as an affiliate for travel brands or destinations.
2. Travel consultants
You can run your own business or work at a travel agent as a travel consultant. Your wide expertise and knowledge will help individuals and groups make travel plans. These consist of luxury, adventure, eco-tourism, or business travel modes. You will suggest one that meets your client’s needs. Besides giving advice on the plan, your other job is to book their accommodation and tickets.
3. Destination marketing
This role enhances job desks that fall under the roles of traditional marketing and promotion areas. For this task, you will need to make more marketing campaigns that elevate the unique “selling points” of the tourist destinations. Work with local businesses and community groups to display what else makes the attractions special. Therefore, all of them will boost the travelling experiences for all global tourists.
